MAN SURRENDERS AFTER STANDOFF IN CARSON
(CARSON) More information has been released regarding a standoff in Carson this morning.
The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office says at around 2:58 a.m. deputies were dispatched to 333 N. Commercial in Carson for a possible domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, a female stated that her husband, 51-year-old Jeffrey Waltermire, had assaulted her and told her to get out of the apartment. The victim stated that Waltermire was barricaded in the apartment and possibly suicidal.
The Emergency Response Team was called out to assist with the situation at around 3:52 a.m. The Council Bluffs Police Hostage Negotiators were also requested to respond to the scene. Carson Fire and Rescue were put on standby and the mobile command post was brought to the scene by Pottawattamie County Emergency Management.
The suspect was contacted by telephone. He threatened suicide and stated he had a handgun in his possession. A secure perimeter was established and the neighbors evacuated. The suspect continued to refuse to come out of the apartment so the bomb robot was deployed at around 8:20 a.m. The robot was used to break the front window of the apartment and tear out the curtains. The suspect decided at that time to come out of the apartment where he was secured by deputies.
Carson Rescue was notified to come to the scene to examine Waltermire. The decision was made to transport him to Mercy hospital because of his long term health issues. Waltermire was charged with Domestic Assault (Serious), and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. No weapon was found in the apartment.
