(Des Moines) The latest economic development tool used by state lawmakers could be given to local officials under a bill passed by the Iowa House Wednesday morning. Osage Republican Josh Byrnes says the so-called “Sales Tax” T.I.F. Rebate had been used in the past for the Newton Racetrack and the Field-Of-Dreams Ballpark project.
“I have had economic development folks anywhere from cities the size of Mason City all the way down to Osage that have sent me a strong support of emails saying this is a great tool for our tool box,” stated Byrnes.
However, Davenport Democrat Cindy Winckler says she changed her mind during Wednesday morning’s debate.
“I cannot support this today, I thought I was in favor of this until I listened to the debate and thinking a little bit further about the unintended consequences,” said Winckler.
But, the “Iowa Reinvestment Act” passed the House (87-9) and, now, heads to the Senate.
