(AUDUBON) The Audubon School Board met Monday night.
Audubon Superintendent Brett Gibbs said they approved a resolution to submit to the Department of Education for an early start waiver.
“Really we’re starting the same time that we’ve always started, but we’re just taking that extra step this year on the advice of the School Board Association to make sure that our waiver request is approved,” explained Gibbs.
Gibbs said the School Board also discussed some of their upcoming projects, which includes putting in new windows and landscaping at the elementary. The bids for the landscaping project are due May 3rd. Gibbs said their next project for the summer of 2014 includes doing the inside of the elementary school, which will be a major overhaul.
“That’s a building from the 1950’s and so we’ll see new lights, ceilings, plumbing, re-doing the bathrooms; that will be a big project,” said Gibbs. “That was something that was part of the original 2005 plan but then had to be removed from that plan because of cost overruns in the original project so it’s just something we’re now going back and addressing.”
Gibbs said they are also planning ahead for future projects that need to be addressed, including their sports facilities, and how they are going to budget for those.
And, the School Board approved a resolution Monday night stating the things the school is already doing, or going to attempt to do, in order to get a number of points needed to be considered a Blue Zone School.
“Some of the things we’re already doing with activities and how we run our P.E. programs and stuff and some will require some change; re-arranging our lunchroom area so the healthier options are before maybe some of the un-healthier options we may have, the type of food we use for fundraisers, one of the changes we’ll see at the elementary school is having recess before lunch rather than after… something other schools have done and felt has worked very well and something the Blue Zone would like to see us do,” said Gibbs.
Gibbs said this will also help Audubon become a Blue Zone community.
