EXIRA SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES EARLY RETIREMENT PACKAGE
(EXIRA) The Exira School Board approved an early retirement package for teachers at their meeting Tuesday.
Exira-EHK Superintendent Dean Schnoes said Exira has never offered a retirement package in the past, however; Elk Horn-Kimballton has, and with bringing the two school districts closer together on different features, they thought it would be a good idea to reward the Exira teachers who have put in a number of years with the district.
“It’s one of those little small steps in getting the two districts closer and closer on what is offered, or maybe what isn’t offered, so if they do decide down the road to consolidate then there won’t be so much of this paperwork that has to be gone through and get them all on the same page when that would happen,” said Schnoes.
Schnoes said for a teacher to be eligible they must be 55 years of age with 15 years of service in the district. He said the teachers will be offered $115 per un-used sick day to a maximum 12-thousand dollars. That number will be divided by two and that is what the teacher would get over a period of two years.
“So if it was 12-thousand dollars and the teacher qualified for that it would be 6-thousand dollars per year for two years that they would be paid,” said Schnoes.
The incentive money will be taken out of the management fund which could affect next year’s budget so the teachers must apply by March 4th so the budget can be certified for the next school year.
