(Area) While we cross our fingers in hopes that the snowfall totals from this winter are in fact total and not about to increase, the Iowa DNR is putting together facts and figures on snowfall totals and how it will affect the pheasant population.
Pheasant populations tend to decrease when the snowfall increases and increase when the snowfall decreases. Here to deliver the verdict from this winter is Private Lands Wildlife Biologist Matt Dollison.
"Statewide we were actually up by 31% and in southwest Iowa it was up 12%. The only part of the state that was lower than last year was the northwest which was down 7%."
Pheasant enthusiasts now sit on the edge of their seats in hopes for promising spring weather.
Fortunately there are some controllable factors when it comes to the pheasant population such as the Conservation Reserve Program.
CRP sign up starts May 20th and runs through June 14th.
