IOWA EDUCATION OFFICIALS RELEASE OPEN ENROLLMENT DEADLINES
(Des Moines) Iowa State Education Officials the deadline is approaching for students wishing to “open Enroll,” to another school district.
The first deadline is for parents to file an open enrollment application with the resident and receiving district on or before March 1 of the school year prior to the open enrollment year. For kindergarten students the application form is due on or before September 1 of the school year in which open enrollment is requested. To make things clear, parents of students in grades k-12 wishing to open enroll need to have their application filed on or before March 1, 2011, while parents of students who will be starting Kindergarten in the fall of 2011 have until September 1, 2011 to file their application. Parents need to be aware of two things when considering open enrollment.
According to the state, parents are responsible for transporting children, who are open enrolled to another district unless their income meets economic eligibility requirements. In addition, students who open enroll in grades 9-12 shall not be eligible to participate in varsity contests and competitions during the first 90 school days of transfer.
