(Des Moines) Spring turkey hunters hit the fields starting this weekend with the youth season April 6th and the first season to start April 15. The spring seasons conclude with the May 1st through 19th 4th season. The D-N-R’s Todd Gosselink says choosing a season has difference advantages.
“Mostly due to vegetation, you go early leaves aren’t out typically and there is not much leaf cover,” stated Gosselink. “And you can really see a long ways so its fun to see them from a distance versus late season things are real greened up and you can move around a lot more without being detected by turkey’s but you can’t see them.”
Hunters should have good success this year. Gosselink says the drought of last summer resulted in a 22-percent statewide increase in turkey reproduction including a 60-percent increase in northeast Iowa.
