(Atlantic) Midwesterners are growing impatient with the long winter weather. Granted we will see highs in the 50’s for the next several days but then back to below normal temperatures again next week with a possibility of snow late in the week.
“We have had what we call blocking in meteorology,” stated Miles Schumacher, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Des Moines. “It occurs in the high latitudes of the atmosphere that shifts the jet stream to the south and it has been there for the last six weeks and that is what has kept it cool.”
So when will the cold temperatures end? Unfortunately April will start off on the cool side…but…Schumacher says that he is noticing a change in the weather pattern.
“The blocking pattern is finally breaking down and once that does we will return to more normal temperatures. It will begin in mid-April with more of an up and down pattern with thunderstorms and that type of thing.”
What is interesting is the contrast between this year and last year’s record warmth. High temperatures in March of 2012 were 25-degrees higher than the March of 2013.
