(COUNCIL BLUFFS) The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the pursuit of a stolen vehicle early this (Thursday) morning.
At around 1:45 a.m. a broadcast was put over the radio that Council Bluffs Police were looking for a stolen red Monte Carlo from the Lakewood Villa area. Council Bluffs Police observed the vehicle westbound on Veterans’ Memorial Highway as it entered into Omaha.
Deputy Hempel with the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office then entered Council Bluffs to assist Police in the search of the vehicle. Deputy Hempel positioned himself at Veterans Memorial Highway and 35th Street to see if the suspect vehicle would return to Iowa.
While Deputy Hempel was waiting he heard that Omaha Police were now in pursuit with the stolen vehicle and it was headed back into Iowa on Veterans Memorial Highway. Deputy Hempel then observed the vehicle approach his position and he then began to pursue the stolen vehicle as Omaha had broken off the pursuit at the state line.
Deputy Hempel pursued the vehicle eastbound on Veterans Memorial Highway with speeds reaching 100 mph. As he was approaching South 24th Street he saw an Iowa State Patrol cruiser westbound and the suspect then attempted to jump the center median at 90 mph, which caused him to lose control of his vehicle. The vehicle went airborne and then landed on its top. The vehicle then slid down the roadway and into the south ditch. The suspect, identified as 30 year old Chadwick Rowland of Pacific Junction, was taken into custody and transported to Mercy Hospital to be checked for injuries. The suspect was treated and released.
