(Des Moines) Do you “skype”, “facetime”, or “voip”, “voice over internet protocol”?
State Lawmakers are considering a bill that would keep state or local governments from taxing or regulating such web-based communications. Representative Peter Cownie says he hasn’t heard much public input on the issue so far.
“I don’t know if the public has really thought about it to a certain extent because it is so new,” stated Cownie. “But once you bring it up to them I am sure it will be a concern.”
The West Des Moines Republican says his sub-committee tabled the bill on “internet protocol” services after learning the Iowa Utilities Board was about to study the issue. And, Cownie says he’s particularly interested in what public comment the I-U-B will get on Voip-or-skype calls. But Cownie says he’s also not interested in discouraging high-tech companies from doing business in Iowa.
