(UNDERWOOD) A semi accident injured two people in Pottawattamie County early Wednesday morning.
The Iowa State Patrol says the accident occurred at around 2:00 am on Interstate 80 just west of Underwood. 50-year-old Sergey Batazhan, of Vancouver, Washington, was driving a 1998 Volvo Semi westbound on I-80 near the 17 mile marker at around 35 mph in the right lane with his hazard lights on due to a fuel issue. 36-year-old Daniel Plaskett, of Magna, Utah, was also driving a 2013 Semi westbound on I-80 and did not realize Batazhan’s semi was traveling at a reduced speed. At the last second Batazhan tried to steer to the shoulder to avoid Plaskett, but Plaskett struck the trailer of Batazhan’s semi.
Batazhan’s semi stopped on the right shoulder. Plaskett’s semi jack-knifed and stopped in the ditch. Plaskett’s passenger, 50-year-od Andrew Lopp, was ejected from the sleeper area. Plaskett had to be extricated by rescue crews. He was transported to the University of Nebraska Medical Center by Lifenet Helicopter. Lopp was transported to UNMC by Underwood Rescue.
