(Atlantic) The winter storm expected to make an impact in the area tomorrow may cause a dilemma for school officials. The problem is the Winter Storm… that appears to be imminent…is not expected to hit the area until 11:00 a.m…Thursday.
“Our main concern is the safety of the children,”stated Atlantic Community Schools Transportation Director Dave Eckels in regards to an important decision that will have to be made tomorrow morning and that is whether or not to send students to school.
“Obviously the Superintendent is going to have the ultimate decision but we will look at trying to get in part of the day without putting the students in jeopardy,” said Eckels. “We want to make sure we can get the children home without undo risk to them or the drivers. If we do start the day we will keep an eye on the districts to the west of us to get an idea on how fast the storm is coming, then we can try and stay ahead of it.”
Eckels says if it hasn’t started snowing by class time, he will be looking at the forecast, snow accumulation, wind speed, and how fast the snow is coming down. Eckels didn’t rule out the possibility that the decision to close school tomorrow… may be decided tonight.
