(COUNCIL BLUFFS) A Council Bluffs man being held in the Pottawattamie County Jail died Wednesday after cutting his neck with a razor.
The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office says 43-year-old Shawnessey McKnight used the blade of a razor to cut his neck on both sides and then started doing pushups to pump out the blood faster. Another inmate in McKnight’s cell alerted detention officers and with the help of nursing staff they attempted to administer aid, but McKnight was uncooperative. McKnight was shackled and transported to an area hospital where he later died.
Razors are handed out to inmates a few times a week and the inmates are only allowed to have them for a short period of time before guards collect them.
McKnight was being held on charges of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and counterfeiting.
