(ATLANTIC) The Cass County Board of Supervisors held a public hearing on a proposed amendment to the zoning ordinance regarding guns sales and an indoor shooting range.
Rich Hansen, Zoning Administrator, said Kevin McCunn has plans to build a facility that would offer gun sales, repair and an indoor shooting range and currently there is nothing listed in the zoning manual that would cover a business of this type. Hansen asked to have the zoning ordinance amended to add “Indoor shooting facilities” under the Recreational Amusement Activities portion of the Business District. And, also add Gun Sales, Gunsmithing and Repair under the Permitted Principal Uses.
There were no objections at the public hearing this morning; in fact several people spoke in favor of the business.
“With the recent closing of Iranistan there’s really no place to do public shooting, I think it would be great if we had a place to shoot,” said Steve Livengood.
“There is no facility really for folks to practice target shooting or even for recreational purposes you have to go to Omaha or even Des Moines and that’s quite a distance,” said Mitch Holmes.
Supervisor Chuck Rieken said this business would be a great asset to the County and Supervisors Frank Waters and Duane McFadden said they have heard several comments from people that they support this type of business in the County.
The first reading of the proposed amendment was approved; the second hearing and reading with action will be held at the February 20th Supervisors meeting.
