(Atlantic) Two separate groups of volunteers have been selected by the Atlantic Community Promotion Commission to oversee the downtown beautification project.
Emily Kennedy, who chairs the project says a group of Master Gardner’s, and Atlantic resident Charles Griffin will work together on the project which consists of putting flowers on Chestnut and Walnut Streets, and in the northwest corner of the city park.
“We are trying to go with the Trevor Frederickson Memorial project that is already established in the park,” stated Kennedy. “We want to duplicate that project with more color all year round and more perennials that would be sustained from year to year.”
Part of the project includes looking for businesses to “Adopt-a-Bed,” to help with maintenance on the flower beds.
“We are going to be asking businesses to “adopt a bed” and help with spring planting, participate in a fall cleanup day, and basically be in charge of maintaining it and making it look nice all the time,” said Kennedy, who adds that they are planning a spring cleanup day as soon as possible.
The Community Promotion Commission is working with the CAM High School who have already started some of the plants for the project from the school districts’ greenhouse.
Kennedy says watering is a big issue and that will be talked about at future meetings.
