(Atlantic) The Cass County Landfill is reviewing options for new sites to place a set of their recycling bins.
Atlantic residents looking to take their recyclables to Wal-Mart will have to look elsewhere as of Thursday.
“We hated to lose that location because it was very user friendly. It was a hot spot in town. I rarely went by there and didn't see someone using it, but the officials at Wal-Mart have asked us to remove those bins from their property.”
Wendy Wittrock, Operations Manager with the Cass County Landfill says the decision was out of their hands.
“What we have been told in the past is they are a very green program at Wal-Mart. We are upset that they asked us to move. From what I've been told it is not a local decision, it is a corporate or district manager position that has instructed them to move the boxes.”
Wittrock says the Landfill is still searching for answers when it comes to the reasoning for the change.
“I have asked for them to formally submit a letter to us in the Environmental Board as to why we were asked to remove our boxes because I have noted across the state and even as close as the Carroll area that other Wal-Marts have boxes at their site.”
Current locations in town include the Atlantic Armory, the northwest corner of the Hy-Vee shopping plaza, and the Atlantic Glass Store.
