(Avoca) A semi-trailer load of hogs tipped over this (Monday) afternoon in Avoca.
Avoca Police Chief Will Rose says it happened at around 2:20 p.m. on Highway 59 near Baker Street.
“The driver explained to me that he was southbound on Highway 59 through the S curve between Highway 59 and Baker Street and was going a little to fast and overturned the semi tractor trailer on the right side where it is right now,” stated Chief Rose.
There were 165 head of market hogs on the load when it tipped over sending several through the roof of the trailer.
“We have nine or ten dead hogs and several that have broken legs and lacerations and stuff like that,” said Rose.
A portable coral was set up for the survivors.
“The trailer was dismantled to off load the hogs into two separate corals which was time consuming,” said Rose. “The hogs were then loaded onto other trucks and trailers.”
Chief Rose said the driver refused all medical treatment. His name or the name of the trucking company could not be released at this time.
