(DES MOINES) In an effort to weed out folks who abuse prescription medication, the Board of Pharmacy is introducing a new bill that would allow them access to a patients prescription history from other states. Executive officer for the board, Terry Witkowski, says right now the Iowa prescription monitoring program is the only program in place to track patient prescriptions.
“The program is essentially a database that collects all of that prescription information and the prescribers or pharmacists can query the application, or the database, asking for any records on a specific patient,” explained Witkowski.
More than 250-million doses of controlled substances have been prescribed to Iowans in the 2012 calendar year.
