(Des Moines) The Governor’s ordering a review of Iowa’s policy regarding issuing driver’s licenses to so-called “dreamer”---illegal immigrants brought to the U-S as children and currently on “deferred” resident status. Terry Branstad says it’s not clear if new federal guidelines declaring “dreamers,” as “authorized residents,” requires Iowa to issue them driver’s licenses.
“Our responsibility as part of the executive branch of government is to enforce the law that exists in the state of Iowa,” stated Branstad. “And the legislature has the authority and responsibility if they believe that law should be changed.”
The Governor is asking the head of the Iowa D-O-T to determine if the state now has the authority to issue driver’s licenses to those on deferred action status. Branstad says he’d be willing to sign a clarifying bill into law if legislators send it to his desk.
