(Des Moines) Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is going to get its rate increase.
The company was seeking an increase of 12 and 13 percent for individual policyholders which are those who do not buy insurance through their employer. It cited increased use of medical services this past year. Iowa Insurance Commissioner Susan Voss concurred in granting the increase. But she also said that health care costs will continue to go up that may make higher rates unsustainable.
Dozens of policy holders earlier this month criticized the increase saying it was too much and should not be allowed, especially after the company raised its rates in each of the last several years.
The decision affects about 150-thousand policyholders.
