(Des Moines) The Iowa Department of Public Health says flu viruses are spreading at unusual levels across the state.
Officials say 151 Iowans were admitted to the hospital for complications of the disease during the last week of December.
The state didn’t experience this much flu activity last year until March and the peak of the flu season lasted just two weeks.
Iowa Department of Health Medical Director Dr. Patricia Quinlisk notes that this is setting up to be a relatively bad and prolonged flu season. She says the outbreak could spread further now that children have returned to school after winter break.
Some Iowa Health Officials are predicting we could see more flu cases this year than during the pandemic of 2009-2010, when H1N1 virus first emerged.
