(ATLANTIC) Emergency Management officials are warning the public to be prepared for the upcoming winter storm Wednesday night through Thursday afternoon.
Mike Kennon, Cass County Emergency Management Director, spoke with National Weather Service officials this afternoon who said this will be a large snow event. 5 to 8 inches, or more, of snow is expected from a line from Atlantic to Des Moines to Tama. Heavy winds will pick up Wednesday night and blizzard conditions are expected Thursday morning.
“We haven’t seen conditions like these in awhile,” said Kennon. “Last winter was a pretty mild winter, it’s been a couple years since we’ve seen conditions like this, so people need to be aware that this is going to be a big event, there will be a lot of snow, really watch the conditions; particularly Thursday morning because they may not be very good.”
A winter storm watch is in effect for southwest Iowa from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday afternoon. A winter storm warning is expected to be issued.
