(Des Moines) Oral arguments in a Lambda Lawsuit against the Iowa Department of Public Health were heard at the Iowa Supreme Court Tuesday afternoon. Iowa Department of Public Health Attorney Julie Pottorff told the court, despite the decision of the court to allow same sex couples to marry, there remain very clear differences.
“Only opposite sex couples can conceive a child and every child has a biological mother and a biological father,” stated Pottorff. “Gay and lesbian couples biologically requires the participation of another person to conceive.”
Pottorff says collecting accurate vital statistics it’s important. The attorney for the Gartner family, who’s suing I-D-P-H for not including one parent in a same sex marriage on their child’s birth certificate, says having both names listed protects the child’s relationship with the parents.
