(COUNCIL BLUFFS) The 14th annual “Shop with the Sheriff” program, sponsored by the Pottawattamie County Sherriff’s Office, will take place Saturday morning.
Pottawattamie County Sheriff Jeff Danker said the Target Store in Council Bluffs opens their doors at 6:45 am to allow uninterrupted shopping before the store opens at 8:00 am. Several employees and families from the Sheriff’s Office volunteer their time to assist with the program. Each child will receive around $175 to spend and is encouraged to use most of the money on clothing, shoes and other necessities, but are allowed to purchase toys.
“It’s been very rewarding,” said Danker. “We’ve had just extremely generous donations from all the businesses and individuals. I think over the last 13 years that we have had this we’ve collected over $52,000 that have been donated to the Shop with the Sheriff programs. I believe we’ve really been able to make a difference at Christmas time for some of the kids that would not normally have a good Christmas.”
Danker said each family will also receive a food basket.
The program is funded by donations from individuals and businesses throughout Pottawattamie County and surrounding areas. The Iowa Department of Human Services provided names of the families who would benefit from the program.
