(Area) Over 70,000 hunters are expected to take to the field as the shotgun deer season opens in Iowa this weekend.
Brian Hayes with the Iowa DNR Office in Lewis says the deer population is down nearly 10% from last year.
Most hunters would prefer colder weather and snow but they won’t get their wish this weekend. Snow makes the deer more visible while colder temperatures force them to come out for food.
The good news from the 2011 shotgun dear season is that there were no deaths reported. The bad news is that there were a number of injuries.
Some important safety tips to keep in mind, always treat the gun as if it is loaded, don’t shoot at running deer, plan your hunt and hunt your plan.
