(ATLANTIC) The Atlantic Middle School Student Council was selected for 2nd place as Middle School Student Council of Honor.
Ginger Bechtold, Student Council Advisor, told the Atlantic School Board Monday night that they submitted a scrapbook to the State last summer and they met every criteria except for one.
“This is a criteria they established for High School Student Councils and the one criteria is that we have to send kids to their leadership camp, well it’s only open to High School students so there is no way we could meet that criteria, but we met every other criteria on there to become an Honor Council,” explained Bechtol.
A couple of the projects the Middle School students worked on included; collecting pop tabs for the Iowa Fire Fighters Association to be given to the Shriner’s burn unit and Penny Wars was held at the Middle School March 5 through the 9th and the kids raised $2,016 for Relay for Life. The students are also learning to write a constitution and they have plans to do a dodge ball tournament as part of an Alzheimer’s fundraiser.
The Middle School Student Council received a plaque in their honor at the Leadership Conference in Des Moines. They were the only Middle School in the State to win this award.
