(Atlantic) Atlantic developer Don Sonntag presented the Atlantic City Council Wednesday night with a sneak peak of a proposed housing project that he and his grandson are working on.
“We are looking at a potential project that try’s to address some of the housing shortage in Atlantic that we keep hearing about,” stated Sonntag. “And this project would consist of some rental housing and some that would be sold.”
The project, consisting of rentals and duplex’s, is slated to cost around $1.4 to $2.0 million. It would be located on East 22nd Street near the Sundance Apartment Complex.
“The rent payment would have to be around the $750.00 a month range,” said Sonntag. “I know that seems like a lot, not necessarily when you compare it to Des Moines, but I do believe there is a market for at least 10 or 12 of these types of units,” explained Sonntag. “That’s’ why we want to go out and get some public input before we head down the final road with this project.”
Sonntag says there appears to be a need for this type of housing in Atlantic for those have retired people as well as the young professionals that move in.
Sonntag adds, “We are really in need of this kind of housing that would have an attached garage. They are the type of units that you would find in a big city, but are short of here in Atlantic.”
Don Sonntag says his son Austin Sonntag, who will graduate this spring from Iowa State University with a degree in Construction Engineering, would be heading the project if it is approved by the city.
