(Atlantic) The Atlantic Fire Department was called to the scene of a combine on fire south of Atlantic Wednesday afternoon.
When the fire department responded to 60977 645th Street they found a combine fully engulfed in flame. Assistant Fire Chief Tim Cappel says,
"Upon arrival we found a little bit of the field with minimal damage but the field was on fire, the combine was fully engulfed. The owner of the combine said when he went to turn around at the end of the field and could smell something hot, something burning. When he turned around the whole engine compartment was totally engulfed in flames."
Cappel confirmed that there were no injuries and that the combine is a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
“As dry as it is it could be anything from corn chaff bunched up in the back of the combine to a short wire. We'll do some investigating and see what we can figure out. The best thing to do is have everybody keep their combines clean this time of year.”
The call came in shortly after 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.
