(Atlantic) Cass County Extension Office is stressing awareness about farm safety this weekend. Kate Olsen, Cass County Program Coordinator, ISU Extension and Outreach says as part of National Farm Safety and Health Week, they are partnering with local businesses to host a Rural Safety Camp on Saturday, September 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Olsen says the camp is open to any local youth in 4th or 5th grade, and will focus on general safety topics such as ATV safety, basic first aid, animal safety, machinery safety, hidden hazards and more.
“The reason we are targeting fourth and fifth graders is because they are at the age when they start do more around the farm and become a little more helpful,” stated Olsen.
Olsen says the instructors will focus on what tasks are appropriate on the farm when that transition occurs.
Extension staff and local business partners will be presenting basic safety information on a variety of topics and campers will have opportunities to participate in several group activities focused on thinking and acting safely.
Olsen says there is no cost to attend this camp, and participants will be provided with a snack during the camp. To register call the Cass County Extension Office at 243-1132 or email email@example.com. Before 4:30 on September 20.
