(Des Moines) Democratic Senator Tom Harkin’s blasting the Republican controlled house for its refusal to take up a new farm bill. Harkin says their delay could mean that farmer’s suffering from the drought won’t get the federal help they need.
“Earlier this year the Senate passed a bi-partisan farm bill with broad support from Republicans, Democrats, farm groups, consumer groups and environmental groups,” stated Harkin. “But the Republican leadership in the house has been unable, perhaps unwilling to bring a farm bill to the floor and refuses to take up the bi-partisan Senate bill. What this means is our farm policy has been left to languish at time when our farm country has been literally burning up with the drought.”
Harkin was hoping that action could be taken to pass the bill before both chambers go into recess for the campaign season. But, he says it’s unlikely that could happen now.
