(ATLANTIC) Firemen responded to a field fire near the junction of Highway 71 and Interstate-80 this (Tuesday) evening.
“About an 8 acre plot was being combined and he (the farmer) had done the end rows, came back around and noticed it on fire,” said Atlantic Fire Chief Mark McNees. “We had a good quick response and also assistance from Brayton and a disc that happened to be traveling by the area that we got flagged down by a Sheriff’s Deputy and then another one that we had, so we got it surrounded and taken care of before it spread too far. Probably four or five acres actually burnt.”
McNees said this is a reminder that the dry conditions and high winds can cause fires to spread quickly. He said if farmers have the ability to disc the end rows while they’re out in the field it would help keep things contained in case there was a fire.
