(Atlantic) The Nishna Valley Family YMCA tutoring program starts after school today. The program runs from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., except for Wednesdays, when it starts at 2:00 p.m. and runs through 4:00 p.m. Tamara Gibson, Fun Fitness Coordinator says they have contacted some retired teachers to help the students with their homework after school.
“We are focusing on assisting the families and the kids,” stated Gibson. “The “Y” receives about 200-300 kids after school and this is a perfect opportunity to help them with their studies. “
Atlantic Middle School Principal Cam Smith says this is a natural fit between the YMCA and the Middle School.
“Not only because of our proximity but because of the number of students that walk across the street and head into the YMCA.” Smith Said. “One of their biggest challenges is students completing their homework assignments. The Middle School has their own after school study corner, but it has a punitive effect for some staying after in the same building.”
Smith says he wants to make sure homework is getting done, so the students have two options: Go to the “Y” have some recreation, receive the healthy snack, or stay at the middle school and receive help as well, “so it is kind of a win…win for us.”
The program starts today, and students do not have to be a member to attend.
