(Harlan) A major fundraiser is underway to raise $2.1 million for the Harlan Community School District. Schools Superintendent Justin Wagner says the Harlan Community Education Foundation has launched a fundraising campaign to raise all private money to renovate Merrill Field, a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics initiative, and band and vocal music needs.
“This is really important when you talk about the opportunity and future of the Harlan Community School District and the community,” stated Wagner. “We have talked a lot about economic development and trying to create opportunities and facilities that folks who are looking to relocate to and raise a family would want.”
Wagner says the new facilities would add to some of the other community attractions Harlan has to offer.
“We know we have a wonderful Wellness Center here as well as a number of other facilities such as an Iowa Western Community College Campus. We feel this is a great way to tie into some of these facilities as a community attraction piece,” said Wagner.
One-point-five-million dollars of the money would be used to renovate Merrill Field which will include; field turf, a new track, new bleachers, fencing, lights and the scoreboard. The group’s goal is to have all of the money raised by May, 2013.
