(DES MOINES) A State audit has uncovered thousands of tax payer dollars taken by a County employee for personal use.
The review covered January of 2005 to March of last year at the Mills County Treasurer’s Office. State Auditor David Vaudt says is focused on former Deputy Tammy Gammons.
“She worked at the vehicle registration area and she was processing transactions and keeping the cash, so she was going through and actually voiding the registrations and stuff where people paid in cash,” explained Vaudt. “She had a little over $36,000 worth of un-deposited collections.”
Gammons was fired in April of last year. Vaudt says the theft was actually uncovered by the Iowa Department of Transportation as it was reviewing registration data from various counties around the state.
