(Audubon) Construction of a new runway for the Audubon County Airport is expected to begin in early July.
The airport will undergo a $2,060,000 renovation project to replace the current runway which has been in use since the early 1970’s. The current runway is in need of replacement due to drainage issues. A pre-construction meeting is scheduled for July 2nd with the estimated start date for the project slated for July 9th.
Airport Authority Chairman Lance Levis explains that a federal grant for $1,854,000 will cover the bulk of the expenses. To cover the remainder of the costs, the city and the county are expected to contribute $103,000 each while Audubon County Economic Development will put forth $10,000.
Levis says they hope to complete the new runway by mid to late summer and explains that the main benefit will be to area ag producers as the primary use of the Audubon County Airport is for aerial spraying application.
