(ANITA) Anita Fire Chief Duane Murphy says the State Fire Marshall is investigating Monday's house fire in Anita. Anita Fire Chief Duane Murphy says the Fire Marshall's Office believes they have pin-pointed the origin, but are still investigating the cause of it.
“We’re just trying to determine the remainder of the facts and he (State Fire Marshall) was going to talk to the lady that was injured and get a little bit more history from her before he released to us what the official cause was,” said Murphy.
The call came in at around 8:30 a.m.in regards to the house fire at 306 Elm Street. When firefighters arrived there was a large amount of smoke and flames coming from the home and a report of a "boom" sound. Murphy says they do know what caused the minor explosion.
“We have determined that the reported explosion, or whatever, was simply the lines from the air conditioner when they burned through and the pressurized gas, when it escaped, that was the sound that was reported to us,” explained Murphy.
Chief Murphy advises the public to stay clear of the area anytime firefighters are battling a blaze. For example, as firefighters were battling the blaze in the home yesterday, someone trying to see what was going on ran over the firemen’s main water supply hose.
“We use a large diameter supply line to supply our pumpers with water, and that’s pretty common for most departments, but anyway, the gentleman drove over it, got his car hung up on top of it and then was trying to spin to get off of it,” said Murphy. “We got really lucky that he did not tear our hose.”
Murphy says had the hose been torn, the fireman inside would have been in danger.
“At the time, I had four men inside fighting the fire and they would have been without water. Their lives would have been in danger in an instant simply because somebody wanted to see what was going on,” said Murphy.
The home suffered significant damage, and a female occupant was transported with injuries sustained from the fire. Murphy said there was also a dog in the home that the woman didn't want to leave in the home.
