(Lewis) He did it!
Duane Weirich, of Lewis lived up to his promise. He climbed onto his 20x32 foot bike Saturday afternoon and rode an estimated three city blocks following the Lewis Celebration Parade. The crowd cheered as Weirich rode the towering yellow bicycle west to east before stopping in front of the Lewis fire station. Weirich emphasized that the main reason for riding it Saturday was to promote the community.
“Getting people to Lewis was my biggest concern.”
Weirich came up with the idea a year ago when he found out RAGBRAI was coming through Lewis, and it was a big hit. People from all over the country marveled at the large bike on display on the Elementary School grounds.
Someday if Duane Weirich chooses to pedal the giant bike 1,000 feet, it could make the Guiness Book of World records for the distance traveled by the largest bicycle in the world.
