(Lewis) "Operation Dry Water" continues today and tommorrow on Iowa Lakes. People should be aware that there will be an increase number of law enforcement officers out on the lakes this weekend with an emphasis on safety.
"A year ago fifty officers participating in this same public awareness event contacted 799-boaters while out on the water, and conducted over 200 safety checks while working that weekend." stated Bryan Hayes, DNR'S Southwest Iowa Fisheries Biologist.
Hayes says by far the most common thread to boater safety is alcohol consumption.
"When you are out on the water and in the sun, alcohol can impair your judgement and slow down your reflexes," said Hayes. "And that is why they lowered the blood alcohol level and brought in line with motor vehicles."
One year ago the legally intoxicated number was lowered from .10 to .08.
