(RED OAK) An Aviation Youth Camp will be held at the Red Oak Municipal Airport on Saturday, June 16th.
Gail Ernst, Manager of the Red Oak Airport, says the Aviation Youth Camp provides children hands-on experiences in the world of aviation and connects aviation to history, science, math and communications.
“It is a great introduction to aviation and hopefully we’re going to touch just a few of our future pilots we’re going to have here in our local area,” said Ernst.
Ernst said during the camp, children will have the opportunity to learn about airplanes and aerodynamics, airports, weather, the language of aviation, careers in aviation and given the opportunity for a free orientation flight courtesy of local Red Oak Pilots. He said the aviation camp is very popular with the kids; however enrollment is limited to only 28 youth on a first-come application basis.
“We have a great turnout for this and I’ve had so many inquiries,” said Ernst. “This is the third year that we’ve done it now at our airport. This year we’re taking children ages 10 to 17. The Civil Air Patrol is a very active unit here and they will also be giving a class for one of the round-robin type teaching that we do here.”
The Aviation Youth Camp will be held from 8:30 am through 12:30 pm on June 16th. Enrollment is free of charge. Pre-registration is required. Applications and parental consent forms may be requested by emailing Gail Ernst at firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 712-623-6523 or 712-370-1511.
The Aviation Youth Camp concept is endorsed by the Iowa Aviation Promotion Group, the Iowa Public Airports Association, the Iowa DOT Office of Aviation, and is hosted by the Red Oak Municipal Airport.
