(Atlantic) Nearly 100 area youth were cooling off Wednesday afternoon outside the Nishna Valley Family YMCA in Atlantic on a huge slip-n-slide brought in by the Atlantic Fire Department, and the water was donated by the Atlantic Municipal Utilities.
This is all part of “The Kids Fun Fitness events” at the Nishna Valley Family YMCA this summer. And the kids were having fun.
“They are and I think that is the key to keeping the kids really active is they really need to enjoy themselves,” stated Tamara Gibson program coordinator. “And this is just a plastic sheeting and hoses and the kids are having fun being kids.”
Gibson says one of the major concerns is the lack of movement in children today with computers and games and things, so quite often people like Gibson are looking for ways to get kids moving.
“They are connected all the time through the internet, facebook, twitter, and whatever the kids are doing. But this is good old fashion fun and this is relaxing to kids.”
Gibson says the “Y” was lucky enough to receive a grant to fund the Kids Fun Fitness program. This giant slip-n-slide donated by the Atlantic Fire Department is one of three major outings for the area youth. The National Guard brought in a Rockwall May 30th, and a “Down Home Country Hoe-Down” is scheduled for June 24th from 4-6 pm at the Y.
