(DES MOINE) ISU Extension Viticulture Specialist, Mike White, says the grape growers have been surveying the damage caused by the cold night.
“The low lying areas got hit pretty hard down in southern Iowa. Up in northern Iowa; especially northeast Iowa, they had two or three days of this and we have quite a few vendors in the Dubuque area and I imagine they are looking at a bunch black leaves and buds and everything’s frosted,” said White.
He says the freeze zapped the first buds. The plants will bud again, but there will typically be more leaves and vines to prune as the plant recovers. White says growers are looking at a smaller crop of grapes this year.
