(Harlan) The Iowa State Patrol says the woman killed in the January 13 accident on Interstate 80 near Avoca had received a text message on her cell phone during the time the accident occurred.
The Iowa State Patrol says, 22-year-old Nicolette M. Johnston, of Harlan died in the crash that occurred at around 1:00 p.m. near the 37-mile marker on Interstate 80.
Iowa State Patrol Trooper Wayne Brosam was the investigating Officer.
“We did get the cell phone records and data off her phone and it indicated that she did send a text to a subject at 12:53 p.m. and received a text back at 1:02 p.m., the sametime the first 911 call was confirmed by the Pottawattamie County Dispatch Center," stated Brosam. "Texting was probably the cause of the accident . She was texting with her device in the car that may have been a distraction to her driving."
Nicolette Johnston was westbound near the 37-mile marker when her car went out of control and entered the median and rotated counter clockwise in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 where it was t-boned on the driver’s side by a 2007 Volvo semi, driven by 45-year-old Bret A. Roberts, of Estherville, Iowa.
