(Atlantic) The Griswold woman who pleads guilty in November to homicide by motor vehicle/OWI was sentenced to five years probation at the Women’s Correctional facility in Council Bluffs today.
On June 4, 2010, Christine Riedemann was operating a 2010 Jeep Wrangler, westbound on Highland Road west of Atlantic. Riedemann lost control of the Jeep, entered the ditch, and struck a utility pole between Front and Pearl Streets. Katrina L. Christensen, a passenger in the vehicle died in the accident. Court records show two blood draws were taken from Riedemann and were above the legal limit at .221% and .162%.
According to Court documents Riedemann and her attorney Michel John Winter appeared in front of Judge James A. Richardson this morning. Judge Richardson sentenced Riedemann to 10-years in prison, and then suspended the period of incarceration and placed her on probation for a period of five years. The conditions of probation include:
Riedemann shall reside at the Women’s Residential Correctional Facility in Council Bluffs, until all maximum benefits are received. Cass County Attorney Dan Fiestner says Riedemann's stay at the Women's Residential Correctional Facility depends on how much time it takes her to complete all of the probation requirments.
"However long it takes; whether it’s 2 months, 6 months, or 2 years, the court doesn’t get into the specific time period but just orders that the defendant reside there until maximum benefits have been achieved and that definition, if you will, ultimately one of two things happens; the defendant either successfully completes all terms and conditions of probation at the RCF and then is discharged back perhaps on just a street probation or the defendant does not do so well and then sometimes we see where we would have like a violation of their probation," explained Fiestner.
In addition to her stay at the Women's Correctional Facility, Riedemann must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and follow all recommendations; enter into a plan of restitution for the payment of all court costs, sheriff’s fees, victim restitution and fines; and maintain full-time employment or be a full-time student. In addition, the Judge ordered Riedemann to pay $150,000 in restitution to the estate of Katrina Lynn Christensen with Riedemann given credit for the sum already paid, plus all court costs. Riedemann is also ordered to submit a DNA sample, and remain on probation until bed space is available at the women’s Residential Correctional Facility in Council Bluffs.
