(Harlan) Harlan Municipal Utilities customers will be paying less for natural gas in the near future. HMU recently signed a three-year natural gas commodity contract that runs through October 31, 2016 for less than what they are paying now. Doug Hammer, Director of Marketing at HMU says their primary goal is to find and maintain the lowest possible commodity prices for their customers.
"We constantly monitor future's pricing and we believe prices are at a level now that are most benefiical and stable for our customers so we went ahead and placed our order, " stated Hammer. "We also want stable pricing to prevent wide swings in customer's bills from one year to the next. We think a three year contract helps provide that stability."
The new contract will run through October 31, 2016 at a price of $4.59, that’s .23-cents lower than the previous contract.
Hammer says HMU typically purchases about 70-percent of the historic average use to account for year-to-year variations in weather. If additional gas is necessary on any day to meet customer demand, it is purchased on the daily market.
