(State) Break out the birthday cake and light the candles, Iowa became a state 165 years ago on Wednesday.
Western Iowa Pioneer Cemetery Association Chairman Ron Chamberlain says Abel Galland was the first settler in Western Iowa.
"Abel Galland settled this area in Galland's Grove in western Shelby County in about November of that year."
A special ceremony will be held for Galland this summer.
"June 24th is when we are inviting 11 different legion posts in Western Iowa to come to a cemetery that we are building from scratch. We found nine burials at this location Northwest of Earling, Iowa east of Dunlap, IA. We have a government tombstone for Abel Galland for being a veteran of the War of 1812."
Iowa became the 29th state in the U.S. when it was admitted 165 years ago.
