(Atlantic) The Atlantic Elks Lodge has received nearly 150 deer hide donations so far this year. It’s part of a national effort do donate hides to veterans across the country.
Deer hides collected by the Atlantic Elk’s lodge are trucked down to Tennessee to be tanned and then returned to the Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown where they are used the make wheel chair gloves, three ring binders, and several other crafts.
"It give the veterans something to do and they look forward to it. The Elks pay for all of it. They truck the hides down to Tennesse to have them tanned and pay to have them tanned so there is no cost to the veterans."
Exalted Ruler Tony Brockman says the donations have double from previous years.
"I think we have been running around the 75-80 range in the prior years so actually we've kind of doubled. So I'm realy happy we got the word out there. Hopefully next year we can even get more.”
