(Council Bluffs) The holiday spirit was alive and well in western Iowa this weekend after tragedy hit home for one family.
The family of Mary Pierson got up Christmas morning and was celebrating just like most of us when they started to notice the smell of smoke. They soon discovered their attached garage was on fire and the flames were spreading. They quickly got out to safety but the garage, the house, their possession and their presents were all consumed by the fire. Mary said after the fact that she just wanted someone to slap her and wake her up from a bad dream.
But no sooner had the fire been put out than the offers of help started arriving from family, friends, neighbors and even strangers who came with offers of clothing, money, and replacement presents. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
