(CORNING) The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program offers free tax filing in Adams County.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is an IRS-sponsored program that certifies community volunteers to prepare and electronically file basic tax returns at no cost for low to moderate income individuals and families earning up to $49,000. Adams County’s VITA site is being supported by Adams County Extension and Outreach with Federal and Iowa Department of Human Services grant funding from Iowans for Social and Economic Development.
Families who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit and other tax credits can save the cost of tax preparation and avoid expensive loan advance fees. Returns are filed electronically and refunds can be deposited directly in a checking or savings account within 10 days.
Site volunteers are not allowed to file Schedule F; C with business expenses exceeding $10,000; complicated or advanced Schedule D; Schedule E; Employee Business Expenses; Moving; or the Minor Investment forms . They will advise individuals to seek paid assistance if the scope of a return is beyond their certification skills.
Appointments begin February 4th and can be made by calling the Adams County Extension Office at 641-322-3184. An Intake form will be sent to individuals asking that they bring required information with them. Returns are completed while the tax payer is present.
