(Harlan) A Harlan man is in custody on weapons charges after an explosive device was found on him while being booked into jail.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office says, 42-year-old Alan Heath, of Harlan was arrested for 5th degree theft and transported to the Shelby County Jail. During the booking process it was discovered that Heath was in possession of an explosive device.
Heath is charged with 5th degree theft, interference with official acts, offensive weapon, and 2-counts of possession of an explosive or incendiary device.
Deputies removed the device from the building and placed it in the driveway of the jail. The Harlan Police and the Harlan Fire Department were called in to assist in evacuating the residents in a one block area of the jail. The Iowa State Fire Marshall’s Office was summoned to evaluate the device. During the search of the suspect’s property, a second explosive device was found in a backpack. Authorities from the Fire Marshall’s Office ruled both devices safe enough to be transported out of the city of Harlan, to be examined and destroyed.
Deputies applied for a search warrant of Heath’s residence at 402 Broadway, in Harlan. However, deputies and Fire Marshall Agents did not find any other devices.
Heath is currently being held on $5,000 bond.
