(Atlantic) A local community dance band will provide another free evening of live big band music on Friday, December 23rd starting at 7 PM at the Elks' Lodge at 501 Poplar Street in Atlantic. Atlantic residents Jake and Pam Auerbach will lead free ballroom dance lessons from 7:30 to 8 PM.
Popcorn Button, a 20-piece jazz band comprised of local talent, will once again provide a range of swinging hits from the big band era, with favorites like "In the Mood," "Flying Home," and "Little Brown Jug." At the band's second annual Holiday Ball, the group is also proud to perform a set of traditional holiday favorites ranging from "Jingle Bells" to "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" re-arranged in the big band tradition. Popcorn Button includes student and alumni musicians from Iowa State University, the University of Iowa, Purdue University, Harlan Community High School, Atlantic High School, and the Atlantic community.
Jake and Pam Auerbach will be back in action on the dance floor, demonstrating the beginning steps of several ballroom dances from 7:30 to 8 PM. They will teach the basic steps to the waltz, two step, lindy hop, and polka. Dancers of any level of experience are welcome and encouraged to attend the lessons or enjoy the open dance floor throughout the evening.
This year's festivities will include an appearance by special guest Santa Claus, sharing his own musical talent on trumpet. He has agreed to take some time out of his busy Christmas preparation schedule to relax with Popcorn Button, and maybe show off some of his own steps on the dance floor!
Holiday Ball is a free public event. A free will donation will be accepted at the door to help defray costs of the event. All ages and dancing abilities are invited and encouraged to attend from 7-10 PM on Friday, December 23rd at the Elks Lodge in Atlantic.
